Largemouth bass are typically the top predator in most sport fish ponds. We utilize bass to control populations of other fish like bluegill and crappie. They are often targeted for their size potential and tenacity. They are great fun to catch and a useful management tool. There are two commonly recognized subspecies: Northern or Native strain, and Florida strain. Northern largemouth bass can show great size potential at over 10 pounds in properly managed ponds, though difficult to attain. Florida largemouth have been weighed in excess of 20 pounds but, this is not the norm. Florida bass are often considered more difficult to catch. We also offer the first generation cross of the two called F1 largemouth. These F1 bass show some of the best characteristics of both parent species in size potential and catch ability.
Bear in mind that adding bass to an already crowded pond will not improve bass catch rate or quality. Ponds and lakes with poor water quality and/or inadequate forage will prevent the full growth potential of any species from being achieved.
