Though not as effective as bluegill at providing forage redear offer several benefits to your lake or pond. Often called shellcrackers for their propensity for eating snails, redear help keep the pond healthy. By consuming the snails they help to eliminate a common parasite to fish. Snails are an intermediate hosts of various grub species including yellow and black grubs. These grubs are found in the fins and muscle of other fish species including bass and bluegill. So as the redear consume snails they disrupt their life cycle: thus, reducing the grub population in a given pond.
Redear are often considered a tasty panfish by fishermen and are loads of fun to catch. They spawn earlier than there bluegilled counterparts, thus providing an early season meal for the predators in your pond. We often stock redear in lower numbers than bluegill.
